“Where are we going?” Damen asked, falling into step beside me, chewing a stick of dried meat.

“We aren’t going anywhere. It’s my day off.”

“That’s why I’m here. What, you too good to spend time with me now? You’re so busy with Astrid these days.”

I almost choked on my spit. Had he seen me with her the other day? No, surely not. No one had followed us after the training session, and I’d been careful to avoid her since so we didn’t experience a repeat of the most satisfying sexual encounter I’d ever had. Because that would be bad, as I repeatedly reminded myself, even when the reasons why it would be bad seemed elusive.

Damen was just goading me. I should ignore it.

“Some of the Guards were gossiping about her,” he continued. “Saying how at one of the training sessions, she was physically responding to all of the Shades, eyeing up Verner and Selene. They were telling me that even though her scent is usually muted compared to the other ex-Hunters that—”

“Stop talking,” I muttered, failing to squash my irrational surge of possessiveness that her stupid fake desire for the other Guards had actually fooled them. Astrid wasn’t mine to be possessive over, nor did I want her to be.

Why had they not been able to see through her act? It was clear to me that I was the only Shade Astrid responded to.

Damen snorted. “Touchy, touchy. Perhaps it’s because—as we both know—”

“Did you have a reason for pestering me on my day off?” I sighed. Not that I actually minded—as vexing as Damen liked to be, he was one of my closest friends. He was Allerick’s half-brother—slightly younger than both of us—and had followed us around the palace when we were children, toddling on short, unsteady legs. It had become abundantly clear that he would be Allerick’s heir from a young age as his power level emerged, but he’d never been given any real responsibility. Perhaps if he had been, he wouldn’t be so irritating. Damen needed a job and a hobby.

“It’s not like you have anywhere else to be. How many times can you discreetly wander past Elverston House before you get bored? You’d have to come find me eventually anyway, for the pleasure of my company.”

“You pay far too much attention to my habits.”

“Oh, I am definitely not the one paying far too much attention to someone’s habits.”

I grunted, not wanting to acknowledge the truthfulness in Damen’s words. The Shades had all been warned to give the ex-Hunters space and privacy to adjust to life here in this realm, to get to know them on their own terms and not put any pressure on them. Astrid was a unique case, but it didn’t justify my borderline obsession with watching her.

If any other Shade had acted the way I had, they’d be thrown in the Pit.

“Actually, I did have a reason for tracking you down. I have a message to pass on,” Damen admitted, sounding slightly sheepish. “But I was hoping to put you in a good mood before weighing you down with the bad news.
